1960年12月10日北アイルランド・ベルファスト生まれ。アイルランドのアルスター紛争を逃れてイギリスのレディングに移住。13歳で新聞の書評欄に執筆していたほどの早熟少年だった。ＲＡＤＡ（王立演劇学校）を主席で卒業後、82年舞台『アナザーカントリー』でデビュー、84年からＲＳＣ（ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニー）で活躍後、1987年に自らルネサンス・シアター・カンパニーを設立し、チャールズ皇太子をパトロンに迎える。
