1907年5月22日Dorking (Surrey州)生まれ。15歳で初舞台を踏んで以来シェイクスピア役者として活躍一方で数多くの映画に出演。 イギリスにおける今世紀最大の名優と称えられる。 1948年『ハムレット』でアカデミー主演男優賞受賞、1946年・1978年アカデミー特別賞受賞。 1947年ナイトに叙された。 1989年7月11日Steyning（Sussex)にて死亡。
