1934年ロンドン郊外イルフォード生まれ。父はオックスフォード大の病理学者。息子は俳優のトビー・スティーブンス。
『ミス・ブロディの青春』 では主演女優賞、『カリフォルニア・スイート』では助演女優賞と、２度のオスカーに輝いた。
1970年にCBE (勲章の一種：Commander of the British Empire)を受け、1989年にDameの称号を得る。
